Internet / WWW
The Internet was a collaborative project that combined inventions and protocols from several inventors. However the two that get the credit for inventing the Internet are Bob Kahn and Vinton Cerf as they used ARPANET models to make the modern Internet which was ‘born’ on Jan. 1, 1983. The Internet was originally created to be used as a way for government researchers to share information, which is similar to some of its uses today. Today we often use the Internet as a way to share information and communicate or to retrieve information from others.
The World Wide Web or WWW was created by Tim Berners-Lee in 1990. The WWW is what we often refer to as the Internet in the modern day. The WWW was created as a way to allow users to access and view information on the Internet through hyperlinks.
The WWW is a tool used by the Internet but is different from the Internet. The WWW is just a tool used to access information contained within the Internet and make it more accessible and easier to understand. The WWW helped the Internet boom in popularity.
The first website was created by Tim Berners-Lee while working at Cern and was dedicated to the World Wide Web Project. While the original website was taken down, in 2013 Cern launched a project to restore the original website, which is online and able to be used and explored at http://info.cern.ch/.
Wi-Fi / Bluetooth and Lamarr
Hedy Lamarr was both an actress and inventor, despite being known for her Hollywood career, she had a natural talent at inventing. During WWII Lamarr met George Antheil, another inventor, together the two would end up creating technology that would change the world. The two created a communication system intended for guiding torpedoes using frequency hopping. This system would become crucial in the development of wireless system like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS, earning Lamarr the title of “the mother of Wi-Fi”.
Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp collaborated on a song, “This Is A Song For Miss Hedy Lamarr”. Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp wrote the song to capture the story of Lamarr, how she was ‘trapped’ being a movie diva. Hedy Lamarr was a genius but this was rarely acknowledged due to Lamarr’s beauty and success as a movie star.
Bluetooth was a collaborative effort that built on the foundation created by Lamarr. Ericsson, a Swedish telecommunications company, began research in 1989, when Jaap Haartsen and Sven Mattisson were commissioned to create a link between computers and wireless headsets that were being introduced. Haartsen would be the engineer to receive the most credit and patent for Bluetooth. The name and logo behind Bluetooth originate from the second king of Denmark, King Harald Blåtand. Bluetooth is an anglicized translation of Blåtand and the logo of bluetooth is the runes for H and B, the initials of King Harald Blåtand.
Wi-Fi, an abbreviation for wireless fidelity, was created using the research of several inventors and engineers. The first products using Wi-Fi technology were created in 1991 by NCR Corporation with AT&T Corporation, called WaveLan. However, Vic Hayes is known as the ‘Father of Wi-Fi’ as he started working on Wi-Fi in 1974 when he joined NCR Corp. Later in 1997, he was the chair of the committee that created the standards and frequencies that are used in modern Wi-Fi possible.
